During the webinar\, MEC’s Building Performance staff will give a tutorial on the basics of ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager\, instructions on how to submit your report\, and resources to navigate this process. The event is for anyone who is familiar with their respective building’s utility bill and facility upkeep. Roles may include property managers\, leasing management companies\, facility managers\, building owners\, etc. \n  \n\n\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \nMeet Your Presenters\n Mary English\, Program Manager\, Building Performance\nPrior to joining MEC in 2021\, Mary worked in the sustainable built environment industry conducting energy assessments\, testing\, consultation\, and overall experience in the field of building performance in both the residential and commercial sectors. \nMary founded Small Step Energy Solutions LLC which became a leading home energy assessment provider\, as well as a building consultant for sustainable new buildings and homes. During this time\, Small Step worked with municipalities – including the Kansas City\, MO codes department – to review and update building energy codes. She also worked closely with area developers to create sustainable developments and multi-family housing based on equity goals. Mary then moved into commercial-business sustainability\, helping start-up businesses in passive house panel construction; energy benchmarking; and efficiency upgrades in commercial HVAC systems. She currently serves on the Programs Committee for the USGBC Central Plains Community; and the Equity Committee for Climate Action Kansas City. \n  \nBrittanie Giroux\, Building Performance Associate\nBrittanie joined MEC as an AmeriCorps VISTA member in October of 2020. She came to MEC after completing a previous AmeriCorps service year in the City of Evanston\, IL’s Office of Sustainability where she led climate education initiatives and was involved in energy and waste franchise agreement processes. \nIn October of 2021\, Brittanie came on board full time as MEC’s Building Performance Associate. In this role\, she manages the Healthy Housing Taskforce\, co-manages the Energy and Water Benchmarking program\, creates social content and newsletters\, and conducts community outreach and events. Brittanie received her Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies from Vanderbilt University.

Join MEC for a FREE multi-day training course!\n \nCities in our region are in process of adopting more recent energy codes\, so MEC is hosting a FREE building science & energy codes training. The course is valued at $200+ and attendees are eligible for up to 8 Continuing Education Hours. \nThis course will provide an overview of the history of residential energy codes in the IRC and IECC and the development of multiple compliance paths. It provides a common understanding of the thermal envelope\, including the impact of windows\, doors\, and skylights\, what is included in insulation installation grading\, and advanced framing techniques. Heating\, cooling\, and mechanical ventilation systems are also covered along with a discussion of the importance of duct tightness. Lighting\, appliance\, and clean energy contributions are discussed. The role of a HERS Rater as a third-party verifier and the verifications they perform\, as well as what to look for in their reporting is included. Stay tuned for additional details.\nMeet Your Instructor\nSharla Riead\, Hathmore Technologies LLC\, EnergySmart Institute\nSharla’s energy and environmental experience began with her first energy audit in 1979 and spans years of progression from working as an energy auditor through construction and installation of solar panels to directorships and management of energy conservation and consulting companies and culminates in her leadership of Hathmore Technologies\, LLC. For over five decades she has performed heat load calculations\, residential energy diagnostics\, solar and alternate energy design\, energy conservation instruction\, contracting\, and consulting. As a Certified Building Analyst and Envelope Specialist\, Sharla assisted hundreds of homeowners with energy retrofit improvement analysis and design. As a Certified Home Energy Rater\, Sharla and her team provide testing\, certification\, and program compliance services for national energy and environmental programs such as ENERGYSTAR\, NAHB Green Build\, US Green Building Council’s LEED® for Homes Program and Federal Energy Tax Credits. Sharla and her company have supported several hundred builders with their Green Building goals. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:EV Vehicle Showcase - National Drive Electric Week - Lawrence\, KS
DESCRIPTION:The Lawrence Electric Vehicle Showcase will be 8 am – 3 pm\, Saturday\, September 25\, 2021\,  in the parking lot on the east side of South Park. We are partnering with the Rev It Up Hot Rod Show & Street Festival. \nThere will be many makes and models of electric vehicles (EVs) on display – Nissan\, Tesla\, Volkswagon\, Chevrolet\, and others. The public can talk with EV owners about the advantages of driving an EV. The electric vehicle showcase will also feature a variety of electric bicycles and electric scooters. A new addition this year will be large commercial electric vehicles including an electric bus from GreenPower Motor Company\, and an electric terminal truck from Orange EV. \nThis local event\, organized by the Sustainability Action Network\, is one of more than 189 community events being celebrated across the country during National Drive Electric Week\, from September 25 to October 3\, 2021. The Lawrence event is sponsored by Crown VW-Toyota\, GreenPower Motors\, and Orange EV. \n \nElectric vehicles are smooth and quiet\, with high torque and instant acceleration. Driving on electricity is about five times cheaper than fueling with gasoline\, and maintenance is cheaper too. Because they get 100mpg equivalent or better\, EVs are one the most effective ways that motor vehicles can reduce petroleum use and cut air pollution. \nThe U.S. transportation sector now produces more climate-warming emissions than does the electric generation sector.  Plug-in EVs are zero-carbon when charged with renewable energy and even if charged by coal-fired electricity\, the greater efficiency of EVs means lower carbon emissions. EVs get 100mpg equivalent or better\, and the driving range of various models ranges from 200 miles to 520 miles for the new Tesla Model S Plaid. \nAll attendees and volunteers are required to wear face masks whenever they are within six feet of another person at all National Drive Electric Week 2021 events. She has Bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics-Statistics and Geology and a Master’s in Environmental Science\, all from Wichita State University.\n\nA life-long Kansan\, Tami lives in Wichita with her husband and their three children. She is passionate about promoting the environmental and economic health of both urban and rural communities in Kansas.  In her free time\, she volunteers with her sons’ BSA troop and her sorority housing board\, and enjoys DIY projects\, spending time outdoors\, and cheering on the Shockers\, Chiefs\, and Royals.\n\n \n\n \n\n\n\nBrandt Hertenstein joined MEC in the fall of 2020 as a Program Coordinator. His focus is on the transportation sector\, specifically advocating for electrification of vehicles and infrastructure development in the Midwest region. He is co-coordinator for the Kansas City Regional Clean Cities Coalition.\n\nPrior to joining MEC\, Brandt was a member of Bridging the Gap’s city-wide recycling team. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology with a minor in Chemistry from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign\, where he also completed his Master’s in Bioenergy.\n\nOutside of work\, Brandt enjoys time with his family\, traveling\, and learning about investment strategies. He hails from Chicago and continues to have a vested interest in all Chicago sports teams\, rain or shine!\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Rural towns and smaller municipalities have specific challenges when it comes to using electric vehicles in their transit systems and installing electric vehicle charging infrastructure. From power delivery and lack of community support to local availability of electric vehicles and overall lack of awareness\, rural townships may face multiple roadblocks. \nIn this webinar\, Clean Cities coordinators from Oklahoma\, Louisiana\, Texas\, and Kansas will share case studies and best practices to help avoid the pitfalls that can impede plans to deploy EVs and develop an equitable charging infrastructure that fits the needs of a smaller transit system. \nGuest speakers Eric Austin of Francis Energy and Chris Nielsen of eCab North America will share their experiences working with rural areas on electric vehicle projects. Francis Energy\, headquartered in Oklahoma\, works across the US with utilities and Coops of all sizes to bring EV chargers everywhere. eCab North America uses Low-Speed Electric Vehicles (LSEVs) for their fleet of eCabs as part of a grant providing eCabs and drivers to rural transit systems for first/last mile trips\, a cost-effective way to extend the reach of the transit. As part of the Q&A section\, Chris will discuss his experiences with LSEVs and F/L mile applications and provide tips to enhance your LSEV experience. Eric will share best practices and lessons learned for working with EV charging providers and how you can partner to bring this technology to your customers.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a FREE workshop to learn more about biodiesel and how it works in today’s diesel engines.\nChanges in vehicles and fuels require changes in service\nVehicles\, equipment and fuels have changed significantly in recent years. Alternative fuels are becoming increasingly more available in the marketplace. National\, state and organizational goals to reduce vehicle emissions and increase use of domestic and renewable fuels have resulted in new pollution control equipment\, reduced sulfur levels in fuel\, and increased use of biodiesel. Mechanics and technicians in the vehicle and equipment industries need the most current information on fuel and vehicle changes and to better understand how biodiesel operates in today’s vehicles and equipment.\n\nThe goal of this workshop is to educate diesel mechanics\, automotive technicians and other automotive industry professionals with the most up-to-date knowledge on biodiesel\, allowing them to accurately diagnose fuel-related issues\, answer customer questions about fuel\, and provide recommendations about proper fuel handling and use best practices.\n\nThis workshop is targeted at fleet mechanics\, diesel technicians\, diesel technology students and others who work on diesel engines. Participants should have basic diesel engine experience.\n\nAfter completing a workshop\, participants will be able to:\n\n 	\n\n 	Describe and compare the characteristics of petroleum diesel and biodiesel\n 	Explain how the fuels work together to power vehicles and equipment\n 	Match biodiesel blends with compatible vehicles and equipment\n 	Accurately identify fuel-related issues\n 	Provide recommendations for preventing fuel-related issues through best management practices\n\n\n\nMEG Corp is an ASE-accredited Continuing Automotive Service Education (CASE) provider. ASE Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be offered for those that meet the requirements for this training. Please indicate when registering if you are interested in ASE CEU credits. As electric vehicle usage steadily climbs in Kansas\, strides must be made to incorporate robust DC fast charging infrastructure that will properly support the growing wave of drivers.   \n“It is time to welcome EV drivers to our facilities.”  \nMark Augustine\, President of Triplett\, Inc.\, which owns 24-7 Travel Stores\, has been studying the evolution of the electric vehicle. “Through grant funding made possible by Metro Energy\, it was time to take this research to the marketplace\,” he says. “Just like many other changes we experience in our business\, we update our facilities as the transportation market evolves; it is time to welcome EV drivers to our facilities.”  \nThe McPherson location features two 100kW DC fast chargers\, with both CHAdeMO and CCS connectors. It is the first EV fast charging owned and operated by an independent fuel retailer in Kansas.   \n“The McPherson charging stations fill a key fueling gap for EVs along the I-135 corridor\, connecting Wichita to I-70\,” says Tami Alexander\, Senior Program Coordinator with MEC’s Central Kansas Clean Cities Coalition\, who worked with 24-7 Travel Stores on the project.  \nThe public is encouraged to join 24-7 Travel Stores and MEC at a ribbon cutting event Thursday\, May 6 at 1PM for the new charging stations\, at 2203 East Kansas Ave\, McPherson\, Kansas. We will be joined by Kansas Department of Transportation and others to commemorate this important charging stop in central Kansas.   \nThrough a grant funded by the U.S. Department of Energy\, MEC reduced Triplett’s cost to purchase and install the EV chargers. 24/7 Travel Stores boasts new biodiesel offerings since July 2020\, also supported by these grant funds.  \nAbout 24/7 Travel Stores  \nIn 1963\, when the interstate system made its way across the State\, 24-7 Travel Stores opened.
